Video: DB's Josh Minkins and Mekhi Miller Discuss Camp Higher Ground and Fall Camp Practice #10
Following a scrimmage held inside Nippert Stadium on Saturday, the Bearcats football team returned to Camp Higher Ground on Monday for Fall Camp Practice #10.
Redshirt senior defensive backs Mekhi Miller and Josh Minkins have both flashed during fall camp and shown they will be reliable options in the back end of Tyson Veidt's 3-high safety look.
Minkins, a transfer from Louisville, and Miller, who comes in from New Mexico State, both discussed the off season and Camp Higher Ground following Monday's practice.
Practice Notes:
- Joe Royer started Saturday's scrimmage with over 100 yards and a touchdown on three catches. Royer followed that performance with another solid showing today with multiple catches during the team period. The highlight was a one hand catch over the middle from Brendan Sorsby. On a ball that was slightly led too far, Royer stretched out and snatched the ball out of the air with his right hand.
- The defensive line has been hit hard with injuries this off season but three freshmen have stepped in and filled roles nicely. Garrison Butler, Lendrick Barber, and Marquez Parker have gotten a lot of reps as a three man unit up front. That group has consistently put pressure on the quarterback and today was another solid day for the young trio. Both Barber and Parker were credited with multiple pressures that forced the quarterback to scramble, leading to little to no gain for the offense. Redshirt junior Rob Jackson started the first team period with a pressure that forced a bad throw from Brady Lichtenberg.
- On the back end, Mekhi Miller, DJ Taylor, and Ormanie Arnold all had PBU's during the team period. Jordan Young, "Gravy Johnson", Logan Wilson, and Jonathon Thompson all had tackles for loss.
- Freshman Quavo Saboor showed up in the notes for a nice open field tackle on Barry Jackson for no gain on an attempted jet sweep.
- Antwan Peek Jr recorded two interceptions on the day as well as a PBU. The depth on the back end has been noticeable through the first 10 practices.
- Xzavier Henderson made multiple catches during the team period with the highlight being a perfectly placed deep ball by Samaj Jones on a play action. Henderson beat his man for a long touchdown on a post route. Henderson also scored a touchdown on a throw from Brady Lichtenberg down the sideline.
- Michael Mussari had two tough catches with Ormani Arnold in coverage.
- Barry Jackson had a highlight reel worthy one had catch over the middle for a first down.
- Sorsby hit Aaron Turner for a long gain on a deep post over the middle. Turner also scored a touchdown in the redzone on a throw from Lichtenberg
Practice continues Tuesday morning at Camp Higher Ground.
