Video: Aaron Turner, Ken Willis, Mason Fletcher Post Fall Camp Practice #6
The Bearcats were back at it on Tuesday evening for a practice under the lights at Camp Higher Ground.
Following Camp Practice #6, wide receiver Aaron Turner, defensive back Ken Willis, and punter Mason Fletcher met with the media to discuss Camp Higher Ground
Offensive Notes:
- Through two days of practice at Camp Higher Ground, the offense has looked pretty solid in the red zone with all three quarterbacks rotating reps. In today's red zone period, the offense scored on 7-of-8 attempts at one point.
Brady Lightenberg found Aaron Turner, Victor Dawon, and Jamoi Mayes for scores. The highlight being a perfectly placed ball by Lichtenberg in the back corner of the end zone, in which Turner hauled in and stayed in bounds before being pushed in to the pads that were set up to protect the players from the concrete.
Brenden Sorsby also threw three touchdowns during the redzone period with Joe Royer being the recipient of one throw across the middle and Sterling Berkhalter hauling in the other two.
Freshman Samaj Jones continues to impress with his arm strength and decision making in the red zone, throwing a perfectly placed ball to freshman Michael Mussari for a touchdown. Mussari had another strong day, making several catches in red zone situations, as well as the team period. It is hard not to notice his effort and approach any time he is on the field.
Xzavier Henderson had another solid day, catching a touchdown from Sorsby and making a nice catch on a deep ball from Samaj Jones.
Manny Covey also flashed at times at running back, making a move in the hole and then showing his speed in the open field.
Defensive Notes:
Overall, I felt it was a really good day for the defense. The offense had their moments in the red zone, but the defensive side of the ball showed a lot of aggression and energy both at the line of scrimmage and in the back end.
- Kye Stokes had a big hit on Vic Dawon at the line of scrimmage in the team period
- Kalen Carroll had a near interception on an overthrow by Lichtenberg trying to hit Xzavier Henderson across the middle. Carroll also had a PBU on a pass attempt to Tony Johnson.
- Jake Golday made several plays in both running and passing situations, with the highlight being a tackle for loss on an Evan Pryor run.
- Freshman Daniel James made a tackle on Corey Kiner and followed it with a PBU on the next play.
- Brady Drogosh had a good sequence where he had a tackle for loss, then filled the hole on a run for a tackle that led to no gain.
- Logan Wilson, Ormanie Arnold, and Jordan Young all had PBU's, while Josh Minkins forced a fumble on a Vic Dawon run during team period.
- Freshmen Willie Goodwyn and Simeon Coleman both recorded tackles for loss.
- Freshman Jiquan Sanks had multiple big hits at the line of scrimmage, with the highlight being a hit on Tyrin Smith on a wide receiver screen.
- Freshman Marquez Parker continues to show that he is going to be a reliable option in the middle of the defense when Dontay Corleone needs a breather. Parker had several pressures that led to either a scramble or bad throw.
- Eric Phillips recorded what would have been a sack in a live situation.
- The Ravens and Jets both had scouts in attendance
The night ended with the team getting ice cream following another hot practice. I personally went with the cookies and cream shake.
The Bearcats have Wednesday off, but will return to action Thursday morning back at Camp Higher Ground.
