NKU Men’s Basketball Continues Winning Streak with Victory Over Norfolk State, 71-62

The Northern Kentucky University (NKU) Norse men's basketball team is on a roll, securing a third straight win with a 71-62 triumph over Norfolk State at Truist Arena in Highland Heights, Kentucky. The victory comes as the Norse demonstrate strong form, winning four out of their last five games and kicking off their Horizon League campaign with momentum.

Standout Performances Propel NKU

Key players delivered exceptional performances to lead NKU to victory.

  • Josh Dilling shone with a season-high 22 points, sinking seven of 11 three-point attempts. He also grabbed five rebounds and contributed two assists, all without committing a single turnover.
  • Sam Vinson added 21 points, showcasing his all-around game with four rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Vinson’s ability to draw fouls was pivotal, as he went 13-for-15 from the free-throw line.
  • LJ Wells narrowly missed a double-double, contributing 10 points and nine rebounds in just 24 minutes. His defensive presence was felt with four blocked shots.
  • Keeyan Itejere provided valuable support with eight points, seven rebounds, and three blocks.

The Norse also controlled the glass, out-rebounding Norfolk State 35-32, including 10 offensive boards.

Game Recap: A Battle of Momentum

The first half was a tight contest, featuring seven lead changes and nine ties. The Norse edged ahead just before halftime when Dilling nailed a dramatic buzzer-beater from near half-court, giving NKU a 41-38 lead.

Despite briefly falling behind 44-43 early in the second half, the Norse regained control and never trailed again. They held Norfolk State to a dismal 27% shooting in the second half, ensuring a comfortable nine-point victory.

What's Next for the Norse?

With the win, NKU improved to 5-6 overall and 1-0 in the Horizon League. Up next, they host Detroit Mercy on Wednesday night at Truist Arena for their Horizon League home opener. The game will also feature Military Appreciation Night, with tipoff set for 7 PM.
